History of the Monastery
In November 1986, our Monastic Family made their first visit to North America. We came thanks to the invitation of Cardinal O’Connor and the gift of an old summer camp dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, where many young Christians were able to find joy, rest, and spiritual encouragement.
The first group of monastic sisters arrived here in May 1987. Filled with faith and courage, the sisters adapted the original buildings to the first needs of the community, and then began the great work of converting the camp into a true monastery.
At the consecration of the church in August 1994, Cardinal O’Connor said: “It is at the heart of all things else that there be a community of women dedicated to BEING, and therefore dedicated to the image and likeness of God, the dynamic, vital presence of God in this world. It is my hope, my prayer, that long after I have gone, the sisters of Bethlehem will continue here, vibrating the essence of life itself.”
The community
Situated in the Catskill Mountains, surrounded by a great forest and two lakes, the monastery is an oasis of peace and tranquility that facilitates a life of silence and solitude.
The small community of monastic sisters who live and pray here consists of sisters from six different countries. The principal artwork of the community is painted porcelain in various patterns and colors. The sisters also work on iconography (painted and laminated icons), medals, incense, and candles.

Retreatants and groups
Nestled within the grace and beauty of God, the monastery shares this gift with those who desire to encounter Him. Eight hermitages are available to welcome retreatants for three to eight days. There is a larger guesthouse that is available for families and small groups. Each hermitage consists of three rooms. Only 1,600 feet separate the hospitality from the monastery itself.
Retreatants are invited to the monastery church for the liturgy and Mass. They are able adore the Blessed Sacrament in solitude in our guesthouse chapel. The hospitality is closed yearly from January 15 to March 15 due to the difficult winter conditions.
